This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
