As any major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
